Domain and Website Issues

Q.What is a domain name?

A domain name, a series of textual characters that identifies a specific IP address, uniquely identifies a website on the Internet. Domain names locate businesses, organizations, or other entities on the Internet. Domain names are easy to remember, easy to type alternatives to obscure URL's that you receive with free website hosting services. Using a domain name allows you to receive more visitors, less bounced emails, and the chance to make a lasting impression on the Web.

A great benefit of using your domain name is that regardless of how many times you change your access provider, your Email and website address will always remain the same

Q. Do I need a domain name to have a website?

While a domain name is not necessary to have a website, it is recommended. Whether you are creating a family website or a business website, having a domain name allows your site to be more easily found and remembered

Q. What type of domain names can I register at BizTech?

You can currently register .com, .net, .org, .biz, and .info domain names at BizTech. We also register Kenya top level local domain names .co.ke, .ac.ke, .or.ke and .gov

Q. How and when will I be notified about renewing my domain name?

You will be sent an email notification 6 months prior and every month after that up until the expiration of your domain name. You will also receive one final notice on the day that your domain name expires. It is important that we are updated about any changes to your admin email address because this is where the notifications are sent.

Q.Is Customer Support Service Important?

Customer service and technical support are vital. The more accessible and the more knowledgeable they are the better. There is nothing worse than having a problem with your site that concerns the server and being able to get no response for days on end. Technical support help lines should be answered quickly and effective answers given.

Q.What to Look For When Choosing Web Hosting

Web hosting is seen as a lot of Webmasters as being a necessary evil. Wherever possible many of us scrimp and save to find the cheapest hosting and while cost implications should always play a part it is important to differentiate between cheap website hosting and inexpensive hosting. The difference can mean a loss in revenue or alternatively it could mean maximised profits and exposure.

Q.Is Compatibility Important?

Compatibility is also essential to ensure that you can actually host your site on a particular server. PHP scripts, for example, can only be run on servers that use the appropriate software. Dynamic websites that offer user-friendly features will generally require SQL databases. If a website is designed using FrontPage then the web host must support FrontPage extensions for the site to even be rendered in a user's browser.

Q.Why do I Need Web Hosting?

Before your site can be viewed by potential customers you will need to look for web hosting. Your decision could prove to be the making or the breaking of your online success so shouldn't be taken lightly, quickly, or based solely on budget. Obviously budget plays an important part in any business decision but instead of looking for cheap hosting you should place the impetus on finding the best value hosting.

Q.What is Network Uptime?

We offer a network uptime guarantee of 99.9% meaning that your site will be accessible to your visitors when they want to visit. You will also receive your email communication quickly and efficiently without any major interruptions in delivery.

Q.What is CMS and CMS Website Hosting?

The exact web hosting account you need will be determined largely by the type of website you have. Large sites with a lot of content should look for CMS website hosting. A CMS is an application that enables the quick and easy addition of content to your site. CMS web hosting provides hosting that supports CMS software.

Q.What are the Considerable Features and Factors to Consider when looking for a web host?

Diskspace and bandwidth are important. There is no avoiding that the bigger the numbers the more appealing the offer appears. However, there are several facts to consider. First, the vast majority of websites never come close to meeting their quote so don't spend your entire time looking for the most diskspace at the lowest price if you don't actually need it.

If you find any web hosting company that offers unlimited diskspace or bandwidth be extra vigilant. Neither of these can actually be offered as an infinite resource so check the terms and conditions and the small print to find the actual limit that is placed on these unlimited offers.

Virus and Anti virus issues?

Q.What is a Computer Virus?

A virus is a program that carries out a specific function and infects other programs in the process. In many cases the whole function of the virus is to replicate itself, nothing more. Other viruses rewrite data files making them useless.

Q.I received an email that said I have a virus, what do I do?

There are a few viruses that forge the from field when emailing themselves to others. Therefore, it may seem to others that the virus came from you when in fact it was sent by someone else's infected system. If you receive notification that you have sent a virus to someone, ensure that you have an up-to-date virus scanner on your computer and run a full system scan. If nothing is detected, then it is likely the virus did not originate from your system.

Q.How can I protect myself from viruses?

It is essential to have an anti-virus scanner loaded and running on your system at all times. It is also necessary to update you virus definition files once a week. Kaspersky Anti Virus Software has recently received several outstanding reviews. BizTech hoghly recommend this product to anyone who does not have a scanner or whose scanner is now a few years old. If you are installing a virus scanner because you do not have one and you got infected, it can be necessary to remove that virus prior to installation. If this is the case, use a stand-alone virus remover before installing an anti-virus product.

Q.What is the difference between CD-R and CD-RW?
They look the same. If you want to "burn" music to a CD, you must use, only a CD-R. Or you may copy a game from one CD-R to another CD-R (your computer requires a CD-burner to do this. After burning your CD-R either for music or games, that disk can never be used again for anything else. Where a CD-RW is rewriteable, meaning whatever data you place on that disk can later be erased or the disk reformatted so that it may be used again for something else. The CD-RW is primarily used only for data files.

Q.Should a Computer be Shut Down when not in use?
Whether or not your computer should be shut down really depends on you, and what you use your computer for. Obviously in order to run a 24/7 web server or something along those lines, we would need to have a computer hosting 24/7, or have multiple computers rotating the task. Either way, it is perfectly acceptable to turn off your home PC when you are not using it, because it -is- a waste of energy, and does wear down the components in your machine.

Q.What is the difference between SDRAM and DDRAM?

DDR standards for "Double Data Rate". DDR can transfer data on both the rising and falling edge of the clock signal, whereas standard SD ram can onle transfer data on one or the other. This means data throughput on DDR memory is twice as fast, hence the name "Double Data Rate".

Also, they are physically different: A DDR modules has one notch on the contact strip, SD modules have two.
